Memorize the Book of 1 John (ESV)

As the New Year arrived and I was praying about my role as a mom and teacher to our kids, I asked God to show me areas that He wanted to change in me.

I felt convicted to model to our three sons that memorizing scripture, and large chunks of it, is something Christ-followers long to do their entire lives, wholeheartedly and without reservation.

As a musician, I am first a composer and pianist, and I survived my comprehensive exams in graduate school by recalling extensive lists of facts that I had set to music. That experience convinced me that music is a tool God has given us to aid in memorization. As a worship leader, I believe we learn much of our theology through what we sing. What better to sing, then, than God’s Word?

And so the 1 John project was born, for all the reasons listed above, but mostly for the sake of the souls that I shepherd. I share it here in the hope and prayer that other families will be encouraged and have a resource in order to “let the word of Christ dwell in them richly.” (Col. 3:16)
